What is Focus mode in Office Word?

Focus mode is a built-in distraction-free writing/reading mode available in the Office Word program. The feature allows you can read/write documents without any distractions.

When the Focus mode is enabled, the Word program window fills your PC’s entire screen, and the toolbars also disappear.

Just like the standard mode, you can change the background color/theme of the Focus mode as well. However, many users often complain that they are unable to change the Focus mode background color or theme in Word.

Here is how to change the Focus mode background color in the Microsoft Office Word program.

Step 1: Launch the Word program and start editing or composing a file.

Step 2: Click on the Focus mode icon in the status bar (refer to the picture below) to switch to the Focus mode.

Note that you cannot change the Focus mode background color when you are in the standard mode. So, it is important to switch to the Focus mode if you want to change its background color.

Step 3: Once the Focus mode is turned on, hover the mouse cursor over the three dots icon on the top toolbar (refer to the picture below) to see the ribbon toolbar.

Step 4: Under the View tab, click on the Background icon (next to the Focus icon), and then select a color of your choice for the Focus mode background. The selected color will be applied to the background immediately.

IMPORTANT: Remember that you can change the Focus mode background only when you are viewing or editing a document in the Focus mode. That is, you cannot change the Focus mode background color from the standard mode. Users often try to change the Focus mode background color from the standard mode and complain that Word does not offer an option to change the Focus mode background color. Also, note that you must be in the Print layout (verify the same in the View tab) to be able to change the Focus mode background.

No, you cannot choose a custom color for the Focus mode background. You must choose between one of the pre-defined colors. In my opinion, Word should have offered an option to select a custom color.

Tip: You can exit from the Focus mode quickly by pressing the Esc key on your keyboard.
