Adding password to an external hard drive

Hello,

Please can someone help me suggesting any ways to make an external SONY hard drive of 1TB with password. I have tried somehow but can not.I do not want to lose my materials. So any safe way is very welcomed, please.

you can use windows bitlocker to encrypt the drive which will add a password before access
