The Uber app, like most applications, uses an IMEI(International Mobile Equipment Identity), a unique 15-digit number assigned to all cellular devices.
Unfortunately for Uber, this number can be changed/spoofed programmatically.

But how do you sign up when it asks you for your mobile number?

Edited: I managed to get around it but the coupon codes have since changed to give $20/£25’s worth of rides separately at $2.00/£2.50 an order, so this doesn’t work I’m afraid.
